Hannah- Class of 2011

One of my favorite things about working with high school seniors is the unique and creative clothing options they so often bring. Like this American Indian inspired dress that Hannah brought- LOVE!

Brianne- Class of 2011

Brianne came from Omaha a few weeks ago to kick off the official start of my class of 2011 senior season! It was almost unbearably hot out, but Brianne was all smiles and full of energy the entire time. And of course, I was thrilled that my first senior of the summer showed up with red hair and freckles! :-)

Emily- New York City

Emily is an actress in NYC who heard about me through our mutual friend, Emily Ernst. She contacted me about shooting some new headshots and portfolio photos for her when I was in the city for a few days last month, and I was thrilled that we were able to make it happen. We started out in Brooklyn for some headshots, stopped for lunch at Bubby’s in Dumbo, (highly delicious!) and then headed to the Flatiron District for some modeling portfolio/fun pics. We couldn’t have asked for better weather, it was an absolutely perfect spring day in New York. And Emily ROCKED the camera, as you can see…

Emily’s makeup was done by the wonderful Derya Derman. I highly recommend her if you are in the NYC area and looking for a makeup artist. She is awesome! :-)

My Savannah

This stunning beauty is my little baby niece. Well, she WAS a little baby just moments ago, but then she suddenly morphed into a 15-year-old young woman. I have no idea how she did that so quickly, but I’m loving every minute of watching her grow up. Luckily for me, she is always willing to model for me, so we went out last week for a “just-for-fun” shoot, and brought along my favorite tulle skirt. I LOVE the combination of the pink tulle and the back-lighting in these pics, I think they have a kind of romantic, fairy tale feel. As we were walking to our car, a little girl who had been watching us for a while came up and asked Savannah, “Are you a real princess?” CUTE!

Jackie- Class of 2010

Jackie is my last 2010 senior! We first met up in the fall to knock out a yearbook photo, but due to the cold, blustery weather, decided to finish the rest this spring.  Our first attempt at spring photos had to be rescheduled, once again due to weather, and it was threatening to rain during this shoot as well. Fortunately, the weather cooperated with us this time, and we were finally able to finish up. It was worth the wait for me! I love the pics we got!

I start Class of 2011 shoots next week, and I’m super excited! If you are finishing up your junior year and are interested in having me take your senior pics, shoot me an email! I’ve got a few openings left for the summer months, and I’m booking into September and October now as well. My availability will go fast, so don’t wait! :-)

Kelli- New York City (featuring Emily, plus video!)

Kelli is a longtime friend of mine, and she’s been in front of my camera many times, which is lucky for me because she is an amazing model. She’s an actress in New York now, (a film she’s in, Freakonomics, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last month!) I think this might be one of my favorite shoots we’ve done so far, and Emily was there as well, which made it even more fun! Click here to check out Kelli’s website.

Speaking of New York- I’ll be in the city this week! This is going to be a short and sweet trip, I leave tomorrow and come back to Nebraska on Saturday, but I’ve got a busy week of shooting, so I’ll have more New York City photos to post soon!

Also, check out the video after the pics for a behind the scenes look at this shoot. Special thanks to Tim Mather and Emily Ernst for shooting the footage. More videos on the way! You can also subscribe to my brand new YouTube page! :-)

We were losing light rapidly, and we had not planned on shooting in the dark so I had not come prepared for that- i.e. I had one little flash with me and no light modifiers, except for the tiny little dome diffuser that came with my flash. I’d actually never used that little diffuser before, and it’s definitely not the same as a shoot-through umbrella or softbox, but it works in a pinch! And it always helps to have friends with you to act as human light stands. :-)

Sophie & Andrew- New York City

I met Sophie through one of my best friends while they were both theatre majors at Nebraska Wesleyan. Over the years I’ve seen her in a number of shows, and we’ve said “hi” a few times, but I never really got to talk to her until we did this shoot. After college, she moved to NYC to pursue an acting career, but after a while she decided that she didn’t really want to be in show business, (although this girl is fiercely talented. The other actresses in NYC should be glad she’s not auditioning anymore!) Then, she started playing around with a camera and shooting actor’s headshots, and now she has her own photography business, which is EXACTLY how I got into photography, so we had a LOT to talk about! (We even have almost identical camera gear!) She also works with animal rescue, which means that besides being incredibly beautiful and talented, she’s also a saint. I know, I know… try not to hate her. ;-)

Sophie met her husband Andrew in NYC, and they got married there last year.  Andrew is a busy actor, he spent last year working for Stratford Shakespere Festival in Canada, and now he is in “Annie Get Your Gun” at the Goodspeed until June 27th.

These two have so much chemistry- they’re like one of those couples on the Match.com ads…. :-)

This was just a test shot, but I kind of love it, because it shows so perfectly how much New Yorkers DON’T care about you and your photo shoot! Pedestrians will walk right in front of your lens, the exact opposite of the Midwest- where people will stop and wait, and then apologize profusely if they have to walk through your shot. That’s New York for you! If you are in someone’s way, you better MOVE!

Heidi- Class of 2010

I love spring! Heidi and I met up last week to shoot her senior pictures, and we got the most beautiful weather. There’s nothing like getting outside again after being cooped-up all winter. Heidi’s mom had lots of awesome creative ideas which is loved, including bringing in their old bench. I LOVE old furniture with paint peeling off of it, and this bench was especially perfect with Heidi’s dress and the location. Special thanks to Heidi’s sister for taking the time out of her evening to bring it to us!

Emily- New York City

I’ve known Emily for years. She’s from Lincoln, we danced at the same studio for a while when we were kids, and I shot some headshots for her last year. She lives in New York now, and when I was there I was lucky enough to hang out with her and get to know her a lot better. She is one of those people that is just awesome to be around- intelligent, funny, genuine, and easy-going. We went out to dinner, chatted about theatre and growing up in Nebraska and life in New York, got cupcakes at Crumbs, bought face masks at LUSH, and of course shot a few pics along the way. These are a few of my favorites, from Central Park and 5th Ave…
